Da Mayor Richard J. Daley 1955 - 1976

Da Maer Hizzoner !

Richard Joseph Daley (May 15, 1902 – December 20, 1976) was the Mayor of Chicago for 21 years and chairman of the Cook County Democratic Central Committee for 23 years, holding both positions until his death in office in 1976. Daley was Chicago's third Chicago Mayor in a row from the working-class, heavily Irish American Bridgeport neighborhood on Chicago's South Side, where he lived his entire life.
He is remembered for doing much to avoid the declines that some other "rust belt" cities like Cleveland, Buffalo and Detroit experienced during the same period. He had a strong base of support in Chicago's Irish Catholic community, and he was treated by national politicians such as Lyndon B. Johnson as a pre-eminent Irish American, with special connections to the Kennedy family. He played a major role in the history of the Democratic Party, especially with his support of John F. Kennedy in 1960 and of Hubert Humphrey in 1968.
Daley's three sons followed him into politics. His son Richard M. Daley became mayor of Chicago in 1989 and served until 2012, breaking his father's record for longest serving mayor of Chicago. Son William M. Daley is a former United States Secretary of Commerce and White House Chief of Staff. Son John P. Daley is a member of the Cook County Board of Commissioners and served in the Illinois State Legislature.

  1. Never articulate, he was the master of malapropisms

  1. Mayor Richard J. Daley referred to a tandem bicycle as a "tantrum bicycle" and made mention of "Alcoholics Unanimous" (Alcoholics Anonymous).

'We must rise to higher and higher platitudes together.'

Richard J. Daley: Life magazine indiscreetly published several Daley malapropisms in a 1960 profile, including mentions of "walking pedestrians," and "Alcoholics Unanimous," and an order to the City Council parliamentarian to read a rule "for the enlightenment and edification and hallucination of the alderman from the 50th Ward."

Richard M. Daley: The Tribune's INC. column indiscreetly published several Daley malapropisms in August, including the statement that "people are getting hurt in drive-by shootalongs," mentions of "Kee-wait" and "Soddo Arabie,"

Daley was known for his tangled tongue. He often said he was exhilarating a program, rather than accelerating it.
  2. One of Daley's most memorable malapropisms was uttered in 1968 while defending what the news media reported as police misconduct during that year's violent and confrontational Democratic Convention. "Gentlemen, get the thing straight once and for all — the policeman isn't there to create disorder, the policeman is there to preserve disorder."
  3. Another notable Daley malapropism was his statement that "We shall reach greater and greater platitudes of achievement."
  4. Earl Bush, the mayor's press aide, once chastised reporters, saying "You should have printed what he meant, not what he said."
